Session 3: Photos, voice and your phone
You leave with: a receipt turned into a table you checked by hand, a voice note turned into a summary and a reply, and the three signs of an AI scam message.
Your phone is the scanner
Section titled “Your phone is the scanner”Find three buttons in the AI app (the app, not the browser): the camera or photo button, the microphone button, and the share button. Every phone puts them somewhere different, so look for the word.
A good photo
Section titled “A good photo”- Flat on the table.
- Light from the side, so there’s no shine. No flash.
- The whole thing in the frame.
- Cover the card number and anyone’s name before you take the photo.
The prompt for paper
Section titled “The prompt for paper”The 4 parts from session 1, plus one new line at the end:
I run a pastechi truck. This is a supplier receipt for my bookkeeping.Make a table with: item, quantity, unit price, line total.Put the subtotal, discount and total on their own lines under the table.Don't guess. If you can't read something, write UNREADABLE.Check by hand
Section titled “Check by hand”Pick 3 lines and redo them on the calculator, then check the total. The total printed on the receipt beats the AI’s sum. Watch for returns, discounts and cash lines: those are where it slips.
To get the table into Google Sheets, ask: “Give me the table so I can paste it into Google Sheets.” If it all lands in one column, use Data > Split text to columns.
Exercise A: Receipt to table
Section titled “Exercise A: Receipt to table”Use Receipt 2 on Handout E.
- Photograph Receipt 2 the way the photo rules above say.
- Finish the half-filled prompt on the handout and send it.
- Compare the AI’s table with the three rows already filled in. Then fill in the rest from its answer.
- Check 3 lines by hand (the handout says which) and the total.
- Paste the table into a Google Sheet and check the total with
=SUM.
Bonus: crumple the receipt, put it in bad light, shoot it at an angle, and ask again. Does the answer change? What did it get wrong this time?
How scammers use AI
Section titled “How scammers use AI”What changed: scam messages used to be full of spelling mistakes. In English and Spanish, AI fixed that. A voice can be copied from a short video someone posted. Ads can show a fake video of someone famous.
Slow down, call back:
- Urgent, money, secret or a link: any one of them means stop and check before you do anything.
- Hang up and call back on the number you already have.
- Agree a family code word, and ask for it.
- Never pay because of a voice note alone.
- For an ad or a bank message, open the company’s own app or site yourself. Don’t tap the link.
Exercise B: Talk it out
Section titled “Exercise B: Talk it out”Three ways to get a voice note in: attach the audio file (only some apps take it), tap the microphone and play the note out loud next to the phone, or type what it says. The checks are the same whichever route works.
Pick a track on Handout F:
- Your own voice note. Record yourself for up to 60 seconds about something from your index card. Get it into the AI, then ask for a summary and a clean message to send. Your own voice only: never a customer’s voice note, or anyone else’s without their OK.
- A photo from your own life. A flyer, a handwritten to-do list, a timetable, a price list. Turn it into a table, a summary or a translation. Same photo rules.
- Nothing of your own? Use Jenny’s voice note from the class group, with Tia Mila’s facts from Handout F.
What never goes in: phone edition
Section titled “What never goes in: phone edition”- Photos of IDs or bank cards.
- Other people’s voice notes and faces.
- Chat screenshots with other people’s names and numbers.
- A customer’s voice note counts as their personal data.
Handouts
Section titled “Handouts”Do-now card
Section titled “Do-now card”While you wait (3 minutes):1. Open the AI app on your phone (the app, not the browser).2. Find the camera or photo button and the microphone button.3. Tap the microphone and ask out loud: "Give me three tips for taking a clear photo of a receipt."Got an answer? You're ready for tonight.Handout E: Receipt to table
